Based on the news, the marker commemorates Father James Page, the founder of over 35 churches from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, including Bethel. Page came to the Capital City from Richmond, Virginia as a slave. While enslaved, Page learned to read and write. He ultimately became an ordained minister. Lastly, Page founded Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in 1870.
